Book Title: Al-‘Iqd al-Nafis fi Nazm Jawahir al-Tadris
About the Author: Sidi Ahmad ibn Idris al-Hasani al-Fasi (1760–1837 CE / 1173–1253 AH) was one of the most prominent Islamic scholars, hadith authorities, and spiritual masters of the 13th Hijri century. Descended from the noble lineage of Imam al-Hasan ibn Ali, he began his rigorous intellectual and spiritual training in Fes (Morocco) before traveling to teach and guide seekers across the Holy Sanctuaries of Mecca and Medina, and later in Yemen. Sidi Ahmad ibn Idris is celebrated for revitalizing sunni Sufism by grounding spiritual practice firmly in the Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah, advocating against unproductive dialectical arguments, and establishing the Idrisi spiritual tradition.
About the Book: “Al-‘Iqd al-Nafis fi Nazm Jawahir al-Tadris” is a distinguished compendium of the lessons, dictated traditions (hadith), letters, and discourses of Sidi Ahmad ibn Idris, faithfully recorded by his close disciples. It bridges external legal requirements with internal spiritual realizations:
-
The Four Foundational Maxims of Conduct: Living in a state of accountability by preparing a sincere answer for God prior to every deed or speech; acting solely for the pleasure of the Divine Countenance free from all ostentation; harboring active mercy and honor in one’s heart toward all Muslims; and cultivating noble character (makarim al-akhlaq) through gentle and compassionate dealings with family, servants, and humanity.
-
Refraining from Speculative Theology (Khawd): Explicitly warning against delving into speculative debates regarding divine ambiguous attributes (such as the figurative “Hands” of God) without scriptural mandate, urging seekers toward firm faith coupled with reverent submission (tafwid).
-
Spiritual Practicalities of Worship: In-depth guidance on specific supplications for each stage of ritual purity (wudu), the inner responsibilities of leading congregational prayer, and meditative insights into the opening chapter of the Quran (Surah al-Fatihah) and the essence of fasting.
-
Destiny, Sustenance, and the Soul: Examining the intricate wisdom underlying divine provision (rizq), gratitude for bodily senses, understanding worldly tribulations as divine discipline, and exploring the soul’s ultimate longing for the Creator.
