- Sultan Suleiman I was born in November 1494 or April 1495 in Trabzon, Ottoman Empire. He was the only son of Sultan Selim I and Hafsa Sultan. He became the sultan of the Ottoman Empire on 30 September 1520, after his father’s death12.
- Sultan Suleiman I expanded the Ottoman Empire to its greatest extent, reaching from Hungary and Austria in the west to Persia and Yemen in the east. He conquered many important cities, such as Belgrade, Rhodes, Baghdad, and Buda. He also fought against the Safavid Empire in Iran, the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt and Syria, and the Habsburg Empire in Europe123.
- Sultan Suleiman I reformed the legal system of the Ottoman Empire, codifying the sultanic laws (Kanun) and harmonizing them with the religious laws (Sharia). He appointed a chief jurist, Ebussuud Efendi, to oversee the implementation of the new laws. He also improved the administration, taxation, education, and trade of his empire12 .
- Sultan Suleiman I was a patron of culture, literature, art, and architecture. He was a skilled poet and goldsmith himself, writing under the pen name Muhibbi. He supported many poets, writers, scholars, and artists, such as Baki, Fuzuli, Sinan, and Matrakci Nasuh. He commissioned many magnificent buildings, such as the Suleymaniye Mosque, the Topkapi Palace, and the Selimiye Mosque12 .
- Sultan Suleiman I married Hurrem Sultan, a former slave girl of Ruthenian origin, who became his legal wife and the most influential woman in the Ottoman Empire. She bore him six children, four of whom became sultans: Selim II, Bayezid, Murad III, and Cihangir. She also played an important role in the politics and diplomacy of the empire12 .
- Sultan Suleiman I died on 6 September 1566, near Szigetvár, Hungary, during a campaign against the Habsburgs. He was 71 years old and had ruled for 46 years. He was buried in the Suleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, next to his wife Hurrem. His son Selim II succeeded him as the sultan of the Ottoman Empire12.
